LITTLE FUGITIVE

A young boy, convinced he’s killed his older brother by a prank from friends, runs away to Coney Island. Little Fugitive is basically the PG version of Larry Clark’s Kids. The entire film feels more like watching a documentary than a movie. Joey (Richie Andrusco), our protagonist, is very Dennis the Menace the coded but always remains likable. The setting of Coney Island is an inspired one the film makes full use of.

Ray Ashley, Morris Engel, and Ruth Orkin direct and write. The cinematography is handled by Morris Engel. Engel shot the film on handheld 35mm. The shots, angles, and framing used help bring us fully into the world of our young protagonist. Little Fugitive is widely regarded as the most influential independent film ever made. It directly inspired the French New Wave, to the point where Truffaut has said that if there was no Little Fugitive there would have been no French New Wave.
